Pioneer Nature Trail Expansion Continues with Donation from BHE GT&S

GLENVILLE, WV – In November 2019, the ribbon was officially cut on the Pioneer Nature Trail that is located behind Morris Stadium at Glenville State University. The trail was established thanks to a grant that was received by the Gilmer County Farm Bureau.

Now, with a $5,000 donation from BHE GT&S, the project moves into a new phase and takes another step toward completion.

Representatives from Glenville State University, the Gilmer County Farm Bureau, the West Virginia Association of Conservation Districts, the West Virginia Conservation Agency’s West Fork Conservation District, and individual donors and volunteers joined representatives from BHE GT&S at Glenville State University on November 17 to commemorate the recent donation.

Jason Harshbarger, state policy director for BHE GT&S said, “We are excited to support this development in our community, designed to create a safe and accessible way for people to enjoy the outdoors. As we strive to live out our corporate commitment to environmental respect, we are inspired by efforts like the Pioneer Nature Trail as it connects generations through hands-on experiences.”

The Pioneer Nature Trail currently includes around one mile of walkable trail, a picnic table, several birdhouses donated by the Gilmer County Girl Scouts, flagpole, an informational kiosk, and a sign marking the trailhead donated by Don and Glendora Hedley. The trail honors the community service of Rita and Denzil Huff.

Plans are to connect the first portion of the trail to an existing trail that can be used not only for those seeking health and recreation, but also for the cross-country teams at Gilmer County High School and Glenville State. Long-range plans call for the addition of a small walking bridge, a rock water fountain, and a gazebo to enjoy the view at the trail terminus.
