SHOEMAKER NAMED INAUGURAL HEAD MEN’S VOLLEYBALL COACH

SHOEMAKER NAMED INAUGURAL HEAD MEN’S VOLLEYBALL COACH

Bethany College Director of Athletics Brian Sansom has announced the hiring of Chuck Shoemaker to lead the men’s volleyball program.

“Thank you to the search committee, Dr. Caridi, Brian Sansom, Jill Willson, Jen Windmiller, and Courtney Hilyer, for believing in me to start this new program,” says Shoemaker. “I am extremely thankful for this opportunity to start men’s volleyball at Bethany College.”

“We are excited to name Chuck our first head men’s volleyball coach in Bethany history,” says Sansom. “From the very beginning of the search process, he was at the top our list, and we felt he would be a great addition to our staff and College as our inaugural coach. Throughout his coaching career, he has demonstrated his abilities to develop and lead programs to success on and off the court, and we look forward to him building a strong, competitive program at Bethany.”

Shoemaker takes the reigns of the Bethany men’s volleyball program, following a four-year stint at Alderson Broaddus.

Prior to joining the Battlers in 2018, he was an assistant coach at North Carolina Wesleyan College with the women’s volleyball program from 2015 to 2018.

Before North Carolina Wesleyan, Shoemaker was the assistant coach of women’s volleyball at Indiana University of Pennsylvania from 2013 to 2015. At IUP, Shoemaker worked primarily with blockers, coaching one player to First Team All-PSAC honors in his first season. He also organized day-to-day team operations and served as director of the Crimson Hawks’ volleyball camps.

Prior to joining the Hawks, Shoemaker completed a graduate assistantship at the University of Cumberlands in 2012. There, he helped lead the Patriots to a 36-22 record over two seasons, while also serving as head coach of UC’s junior varsity squad. Additionally, his Cumberlands tenure allowed the Pittsburgh, Pa., native to assist in all aspects of skills training and recruiting.

Shoemaker’s other experience includes one season as assistant men’s volleyball coach for Deer Lakes High School, where he helped lead DLHS to the 2011 PIAA State Championship. He has also offered his services at several camps and clinics. Most recently, he posted a 37-27 record with the Pittsburgh Elite Volleyball Association, including two tournament wins and a fourth-place finish in the Keystone Regional Bid tournament.

“This is an opportunity to expand men’s volleyball in the state of West Virginia,” adds Shoemaker. “Bethany’s location is in a good place for the sport to thrive. I’m looking forward to leading that process. We will be searching for students that excel in academics and have high-level athleticism. Volleyball should be their passion, but we also will require they focus on achieving academic excellence and represent Bethany in the highest standards.”

Shoemaker is a 2011 graduate of Clarion University with a degree in secondary education and minor in coaching. He spent four seasons as the Golden Eagles’ women’s volleyball manager, and during his 2010 senior season, Clarion advanced to the Elite Eight of the 2010 NCAA Division II Championships. He later earned his M.A. Ed. from Cumberlands in 2012.
