BETHANY, W.Va.– Bethany College’s annual Light Up Night celebration was held on Dec. 1 in an effort to bring the community together, spread holiday cheer, and raise funds for a local charity. Donations in support of Bernie’s Kids Foundation of Brooke County reached $3,700 this year.
Bernie’s Kids is a charity organization, in honor of the late Brooke County Sheriff and Commissioner Bernie Kazienko, that gives the area’s less fortunate children a memorable Christmas. Bethany College has partnered with this charity for many years to raise funds through the Light Up Night Celebration.
Light Up Night is run like an auction, in which student organizations and college departments are prompted to design and create their own themed tree and/or wreath for attendees to bid on throughout the night. The trees and wreaths feature eye-catching items, such as gift cards, food, and other valuables.
The “Eat Like a Boss” tree, sponsored by the Student Life Department, ranked at the highest bidding with $485.
Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends attended the festivities at no cost and enjoyed refreshments and light snacks, including treats from a donut truck.
To end the night, Santa made a surprise appearance and greeted the children.
