Pioneer Baseball Begins Four-Game Conference Road Trip

Glenville State Baseball starts its first conference road trip of the 2023 season. The Pioneer's first leg of the road stretch starts with a doubleheader with the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus. On Monday GSU closes out the trip at Notre Dame College.

A Look at the Pioneers 


Glenville State is coming off doubleheaders to Fairmont State and Frostburg State. While the Pioneers only picked up one win, they would drop two close contests. Both Chase Swain and Austin Corn gave GSU solid starts. The Ravenswood, W.Va. native went six and two-thirds innings striking out 12 batters while not giving up a single walk. Corn in the first game against the Falcons gave the Pioneers a great start only allowing four hits. 


The Pioneer's bullpen continues to rank in the top half of the conference. Through 21 games Glenville has the fifth-best ERA in the MEC. While GSU has a batting average of .201, Coach Mullins's squad has hit the fifth most home runs in the conference. 


GSU By the Numbers

  • 163: Glenville State's bullpen ranks second in the MEC for strikeouts. 
  • 96.5%: The Pioneers have the best fielding percentage in the conference.
  • 2: GSU has posted two shutouts this season which is first in the MEC and 30th in the country.
  • 13: Coby Howatineck sits ninth in Division II for pitching appearances.

A Look at the Battlers 


Similarly to the Pioneers, Alderson Broaddus has started conference play (1-3). In their opening series with West Virginia Wesleyan, the Battlers split the series. During the second game of the doubleheader, Cole Cooper got the start for AB. Cooper pitched a complete game for the Battlers and posted a shutout.  


So far this season Alderson Broaddus has been one of the best-hitting teams in the conference. The Battlers rank first for team batting average and on-base percentage. AB's bullpen also sits towards the top of the MEC. Alderson Broaddus is coached by Zac Mishler who enters his second season under the helm. 


AB By the Numbers

  • 8: In the win against Wesleyan Cole Cooper recorded eight strikeouts. 
  • .412: Chandler Ballenger sits second in the MEC for batting average. 
  • 165: The Battlers have recorded the second most hits in the conference.
  • 22: Cole Copper ranks ninth in the MEC for strikeouts this season.

A Look at the Falcons


After a rough start ot the 2023 season Notre Dame College picked up its first win of the season to open conference play. The Falcons were able to win 7-1 tying a season high for runs. Alec Mendoza got the start for NDC and wnt seven innings only giving up four hits. Notre Dame also recorded a season-high ten hits in the winning effort. 


Similarly to the Pioneers, the Falcons bats have had a slow start to the season. As a team, Notre Dame College is hitting .189 which is 11th in the MEC. NDC in the 91 at-bats has only recorded 76 hits. The Falcons are coached by Len Barker who enters his 12th season under the helm. 


NDC By the Numbers

  • .333: Maximilian Schweiger leads the Falcons in batting average this season. 
  • 1: Alec Mendoza is the only Falcon pitcher to record a win during the 2023 season.
  • 15: Johnny Anservitz leads the Notre Dame bullpen in strikeouts. 
  • 2: Notre Dame College sits 11th in the MEC for home runs.
